I don’t actually remember ever watching The Big Match, ITV’s football highlights programme, as a kid - as the title of this site suggests, I only have memories of Match of the Day - but looking at Wikipedia, it would appear it was quite an important show in the growth of football coverage on TV.
The reason I mention it, however, is because most Sundays I’ve stumbled across a show called “The Big Match Revisited” which shows classic matches and highlights from seasons past. It’s really interesting seeing how the game has changed and it’s nice to see something on TV about football in the seventies and eighties that is actually featuring the football and not the terrace culture or hooliganism of the time.
The show seems to air on Thursday daytimes on ITV4, with repeats on Fridays and most Sundays. If you’re interested in catching some past action, listings are available at TV Guide (UK).
Today’s episode included a game from 5th March 1983 between Sunderland and Everton, at Sunderland’s old ground Roker Park. One moment that stood out was a superb goal scored by Sheedy for Everton, disallowed for offside as his team mate Johnson was standing in an offside position when he struck the shot. Johnson was so far to the right of the goal, a long way from the goalkeeper, that he didn’t even appear on screen - yet the offside was given. The presenter showed why the goal was disallowed and then made mention of the ongoing debate over whether the offside player was interfering with play - so nothing’s changed in 25 years!
